Treaty of Campo Formio (1797)
The Treaty of Campo Formio was a peace agreement, which was signed by Count Philipp von Cobenzl, representing Austria, and Napoleon Bonaparte, the French General, on October 18, 1797. This geopolitical compact put an end to the successful military campaign conducted by Napoleon, against the Austrian Army in Italy.
By the Treaty of Campo Formio, Austria was forced to hand over the Austrian Netherlands (present Belgium), the Lombardy, and a few islands in the Mediterranean to France.
