North Vietnamese Army in Combat
During the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese Army in combat action was a fighting force to be reckoned with. Originally trained by Soviet cadre during French-Indochina War, by 1968 it was already a powerful regular army composed of many infantry and armored divisions. Their commander was General Vo Nguyen Giap. In the 1960s, it was supplied by China as both countries share a common border in the north.
In the historical video below, you can see the North Vietnamese Army's 324th Division fighting in the city of Hue during the 1968 Tet Offensive. They engaged elements of the US 1st and 5th Marine Division as well as South Vietnamese Army units in ferocious combat. This North Vietnamese division had been given the mission to take the city. Although they would eventually lose the battle of Hue to the American forces, by 1974 it had become an unstoppable army, which would take the city of Saigon in April 1975.
