Battle of Verona (1799)

The Battle of Verona was a French Revolutionary War battle that took place on March 26, 1799, in Verona, Veneto, Italy. It was the French First Republic's Army that engaged the Royal Austrian Army in northern Italy. The First Republic arose during the French Revolution, replacing the absolute monarchy of the Bourbon dynasty in 1793. When this happened, all the European monarchic governments began waging war against the French.

The Battle of Verona consisted of three military engagements fought on the same day between the French Army, led by Barthelemy Schérer, and the Austrian forces, under Pal Kray. The result was a draw, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. At that time, Napoleon was in Egypt conducting the military campaign, from which he would return to France in August 1799.
